Food Reading List #2: 'Avocado Anxiety' -
This is an excellent book exploring a number of food related stories, each one about a particular food stuff. Louise Gray is a good food writer, and there is plenty of geography in these pieces. One of the final pieces focusses on the avocado: a fruit (actually a berry) with a particularly large carbon and water footprint. Different chapters focus on different foods, as Mark Avery explains here. I used this particular crop as a context for my work on the Discover Geography series. It featured in a chapter on food security. This also forms part of my Food for Thought unit which Year 7 students are introduced to. Very much Everyday Geographies.
